The Ukraine War with Russia and President Trump’s Stance on Stopping the Killing

A Complex Conflict and a Controversial Perspective

The Ukraine war with Russia, which began in 2014, has been one of the most significant and tragic conflicts in recent history. The war started with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and has since evolved into a prolonged and bloody conflict in Eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Donbas region. This war has resulted in thousands of deaths, displacement of civilians, and a humanitarian crisis that continues to impact the region.

The Origins of the Conflict

The roots of the conflict can be traced back to the political and cultural divisions within Ukraine itself. Ukraine has long been divided between its western part, which tends to favor closer ties with Europe and the European Union, and its eastern part, which has a significant population of ethnic Russians and favors closer relations with Russia. These divisions came to a head in 2014 when Ukraine’s then-President Viktor Yanukovych, who was seen as pro-Russian, was ousted following mass protests known as the Euromaidan.

In response to Yanukovych’s ouster, Russia annexed Crimea in March 2014, a move that was widely condemned by the international community but justified by Russia on the grounds of protecting the rights of ethnic Russians in Crimea. This annexation was followed by pro-Russian separatists in the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine declaring independence and forming the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. The Ukrainian government launched a military operation to reclaim these territories, leading to a full-scale conflict.

Can Ukraine Win the War

It is widely acknowledged that Ukraine cannot win the war without substantial support from the West, particularly from Europe and the United States. While European nations are willing to deploy “boots on the ground,” their involvement is not intended for combat. Instead, their role would be to help maintain stability after a peace agreement is reached between Ukraine and Russia.

President Zelenskyy is frustrated and outraged that the international community does not recognize the dangers of allowing Russia to be rewarded for its aggression by conceding territory to Putin. The harsh reality is that if a nation cannot defend itself against an aggressor, it risks losing some or all of its sovereignty. This is precisely why Ukraine has been eager to join NATO. However, NATO membership was denied for several reasons, including concerns about corruption within Ukraine’s government. Additionally, the West was not willing to risk triggering World War III by accepting Ukraine into the alliance.

President Zelenskyy is determined to continue fighting because he believes that stopping now would mean making concessions to Russia and legitimizing its invasion. His goal is not just to end the war but to win it decisively—without sacrificing Ukrainian territory in the process.

Personality Conflicts

It is unlikely that President Trump holds a favorable view of President Zelenskyy for several reasons:

  1. Impeachment Ties – President Trump was impeached due to his call with President Zelenskyy. During the call, Trump requested Zelenskyy’s assistance in investigating Biden, but Zelenskyy did not support Trump’s claims, ultimately leaving him politically vulnerable.
  2. Concerns Over Corruption – Many believe that a significant portion of the aid provided to Ukraine has been misused, benefiting individuals in power, including President Zelenskyy and potentially President Biden.
    • Ukraine has long been known for governmental corruption, both before and during the war.
  3. Discontent Over Financial Aid – President Trump has expressed frustration that President Biden provided billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine without requiring repayment. In contrast, European countries made it clear to Zelenskyy that the funds they provided were loans, expecting reimbursement.
  4. Election Involvement – During the 2024 election season, President Zelenskyy was perceived as aligning with President Biden rather than remaining neutral, which likely further soured Trump’s opinion of him.

These factors contribute to Trump’s likely disdain or lack of trust toward Zelenskyy.

My Conclusion

President Trump’s Perspective on the Ukraine War

President Trump does not believe that Ukraine can win the war, and neither Europe nor the United States is willing to commit the troops or advanced weaponry necessary to give Ukraine a realistic chance of victory.

Trump’s primary goal is to end the war. He acknowledges that Ukraine cannot achieve a decisive victory and believes the best possible outcome for the Ukrainian people is a negotiated settlement. This would likely involve ceding some territory to Russia in exchange for Ukraine retaining control over the majority of its land.

Additionally, Trump wants Ukraine to repay the United States for the financial and military aid provided under President Biden’s administration.

Trump is also concerned that granting President Zelenskyy security guarantees tied to a mineral deal would restrict his ability to negotiate with Russia. He prefers to keep the mineral rights agreement separate from any ceasefire or peace negotiations, ensuring it is not influenced by Zelenskyy’s political survival or Russia’s actions after a settlement is reached.
